Bugatti.... a new definition of prestige.

Story continued....   It’s in 1909 that Bugatti finally opened a business of his own in a disused dyeing works in the town of Molsheim in the Alsatian region of Germany. This would later become the historical head, where all the everlasting creations were designed and crafted, and where Bugatti Atelier is still found today.

In 1910, five automobiles were built and sold, while EB’s long-time assistant, Ernest Fridrich, began driving in races, laying the foundation for the legendary success of Bugatti racing cars in the years to come.

Immortality was gained in 1921: first, second, third and fourth place was the Bugatti team’s balance at the Voittures Grand Prix in Brescia, and with “Model 35”, introduced in 1924, which with over 2,000 victories was the most successful car of all time.

There was only one dream remaining: to build extreme luxury cars. In 1926 he finally made it real with the introduction of the Royale, the most expensive automobile up to that time. The 8-cylinder engine had a 12.7 liter capacity that delivered 300 hp. Unfortunately, the timing was totally wrong as the Royale was presented just as the world was entering the Great Depression. With only three of these fantastic automobiles sold, Bugatti was on the verge of ruining his business.
He nevertheless managed to escape what seemed to be his destiny by installing the Royale engines, these technological masterpieces, in trains, after winning a contract with the French government.

Model 57 was his last success, and in 1939 he obtained his last big victory at Le Mans. A bitter victory since his son and designated heir died soon after during a test-run in the same car that had won the race only weeks before. A few days later, the Second World War began, and Bugatti ceased his activities forever.
He died on August 21, 1947, after creating with his genius a myth of matchless strength in luxury and racing cars.

Ferrari da Varese is a niche company, representing its creations beyond the concept of mere writing instruments, considering them objects of art which enhance creativity and experience.

Ferrari da Varese unites two different and truly European traditions: Italian and German working teams. Every singe edition is the result of a sometimes daring mixture, of a hard work, which composes the drive of the designers with the creativity of the artisans who must translate those lines in writing sculptures.

Bugatti Type A is an evocative limited edition, which recalls the classical lines of the Bugatti style, its never ending sinuous lines.. A project which has lasted two years, from the visualization of the model to the definition of the production’s details, to the technical solutions, to the extreme engineering of the shapes. The link to the Veyron is only partially direct: the parallel runs along these ideal directives of style, but Bugatti Type A wants to stand out as an independent design, as an eternal recall of the classical Bugatti imprint.

Design: the cap is curved following the classical radius which is manifest or hidden in many details of the Bugatti eternal style, while the clip, set in a game of playing surfaces, redesigns the car’s handle. A calibrated and oval ruby stone on the back of the cap becomes the sealing-wax of the Bugatti Ferrari da Varese pen.

The complex barrel design is obtained with an ideal crossing of curved splines, and the lateral lacquered surfaces sink in the pen’s body like hypothetical air intakes following the body of the Veyron. Also the fin in relief on the barrel is taken from the car’s line.

Sapphire glasses: in the cap and in the barrel three scratch-less sapphire glasses are inserted. This allows the sight of the nib and ink level, the “writing engine” in a parallel with the car where the motor engine is visible.

Technique: the Bugatti Type A is a technological-productive virtuosity. To ensure the perfect closure of the cap, and a precise line-up of the different parts, an unusual and advanced bayonet system has been created, made possible by using a stainless steel micro-sphere, which is inserted in the cap within an elastic ring system which allows its breathing while the ball runs along the mill-made groove on the steel nib grip up to the point where it secures the cap with a soft click.
Absolute precision is guaranteed by the use of multi axes machines to shape the smallest details of this complicated though smooth pen.

A second bayonet closure with a micro-sphere, again innovative in the high end writing instruments world, is set in the body of the pen to block the nib grip and secure the converter.

The clip is endowed with a spring mechanism hidden in the cap, perfectly calibrated to function.

The main material used is aluminum, a technical metal which gives us lightness and durability; the selected alloy is perfectly chosen as to enable the smoothest work on the C/C machines. All parts are then treated before being plated: most of them are hand brushed while the others are hand polished, to create that slight elegant contrast of different light reflections.
The plating technique is a very advanced one, involving four different materials and creating four subsequent layers: first nickel, and then three precious metals being sterling silver, palladium and platinum. This way we ensure perfect durability and avoid oxidation.
Notice the fine milling of the Bugatti logo at the end of the barrel, excellent miniaturized technical proof, hand lacquered in black to make the brand even more outstanding.
Also notice the thin fin on the barrel, an engineering virtuosity realized by removing the exceeding material, which is a very difficult task to program when combined with the continuous variation of the shape of the barrel where it is inserted.

The sapphire glasses are milled with the same caution and precision used in high-end watch-making in order to obtain a calibrated and invariable housing, and they are tested against temperature variations which could modify their assets.

The “writing engine”, the feeder and the nib, is qualitatively superior. In particular, the nib is in rhodium covered 18 kt gold, and it is equipped with an iridium tip which guarantees a smooth writing.

A superb manual and technical craftsmanship, both hand crafted and artistic: this is the spirit of the co-operation between Bugatti and Ferrari da Varese; the matching of two different worlds which have in common the passion for the new, the research, the attention and love for the beauty, guided by a long tradition of excellence in the making.
